Henry Green (1833-1900)
Mary Magdalena Kaul, the youngest daughter of Johannes Jacob and Anna Gertrude Karsch Kaul, arrived in 1859. We are unable to ascertain definitively where she migrated after her arrival. We can only surmise based on a biography written about her son Fred Green, that she joined her brothers and came from Albany, NY straight to New Frankfort, Saline, Missouri.
We first locate Mary in Peter Kaul's 1919 obit, listed as Mrs. Green from Ligonier, Indiana. We discover a Mary Magdalena Kaul mentioned in several documents in Ligonier, Noble, Indiana and she is married to a Henry Green. Based on the biography written in History of northeast Indiana : LaGrange, Steuben, Noble and DeKalb Counties. Chicago: Lewis Pub. Co., 1920, Mary, who went by her middle name Magdalena, was married in 1861 in Jefferson Township, Saline, Missouri, which is New Frankfort. Her husband Henry Green was engaged in the meat business for himself and while there he married Mary. Henry furnished meat for both the Union and Confederate armies. Henry's uncle resided in Ligonier, Indiana and persuaded him to move to the area. Based on their first child's birth we can ascertain they were in Ligonier by August of 1864. They resided their until their deaths.
Three children were born of this marriage; Frederick H., John H., and Harry, all living to adulthood. It is noteworthy to mention that Mary Magdalena's grandson, Dwight H. Green was part of the District Attorney team that took down Al Capone and he later went on to serve two terms as Governor in the State of Illinois.
